Institute of Physics (IOP) Bhubaneswar invites application from eligible applicants for admission to Doctoral of Philosophy (PhD) Program for the 2018 sessions.
About the Institute of Physics Bhubaneswar
Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar is an autonomous research institute of Dept of Atomic Energy (DAE), Govt. of India.
The research activities in the Institute spans theoretical and experimental research in the areas of condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, high energy physics and interdisciplinary areas such as quantum computation. Institute of Physics has large number of world-class experimental facilities.
Institute is actively involved in international collaborations with CERN (Switzerland) (ALICE, CMS), BNL (USA), ANL (USA), GSI (Germany). Institute is also participating in various research activities related to India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO). It comprises of one year of Course Work; this coursework is designed to prepare fresh M.Sc. students for taking up research work as well as imparting a broad-based training in advanced physics.
The coursework runs from August to June every year; on successful completion, the students are eligible take up research work under the supervision of faculty members of the Institute, leading to the PhD degree awarded by Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a deemed-to-be University within the Dept of Atomic Energy.
Duration & Fellowship
During the first two years of the PhD Program (which includes the period of coursework), scholars are paid a fellowship of Rs 25000/- pm.
Thereafter, scholars are placed in Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) grade and are paid Rs.28000/- pm.
In addition, there is an annual contingency grant of Rs 32000/- to meet expenses on books and other research-related expenses including academic travel.

PhD Eligibility Criteria
The Institute invites application for its regular Doctoral Programs Starting from August 2018. Indian nationals satisfying the following criteria are eligible to apply:
M.Sc. in Physics with a minimum of 55% marks (in aggregate) or equivalent CGPA cumulatively till the last year/semester (Applicants appearing for M.Sc. in 2018, and who satisfy any of the criteria (2) as mentioned below can apply. Their admission will be treated as provisional).
A valid GATE score with rank upto 200,
CSIR NET (JRF) within the last one year (Examinations held in June and Dec 2017),
DST-INSPIRE fellowship for carrying out PhD.
Applicants having a rank upto 120 (Sl. No.: 303, Percentile: 84.98) in JEST 2018 (PhD only).
(Applicants are required to upload the supporting documents regarding GATE/ NET/ DST-INSPIRE and produce the same in original at the time of selection).
If an applicant has a rank beyond 120 (Sl. No.: 303, Percentile: 84.98) in JEST-2018 but satisfies the criteria mentioned above, she/he is encouraged to apply.
Institute of Physics PhD Selection Procedure
Eligible applicants are required to appear for a written test at around 09.00 AM in the morning of 04th June 2018 at IOP, Bhubaneswar. Those shortlisted on the basis of the performance in the written test will appear for a personal interview during 04th – 06th June 2018.
The final selection will be based on the performance in the test and the personal interview.
Applicants appearing for the written test will be reimbursed sleeper class round trip train fare between their place of residence and Bhubaneswar. A sum of Rs.600/- will be provided to meet living expenses.
